Rethinking Drinking

How do you know if you have a drinking problem?

Do you enjoy a drink now and then? Many of us do, often when socializing with friends and family. Drinking can be beneficial or harmful, depending on your age and health status, the situation and, of course, how much you drink.

Do you think you may drink too much at times? Do you think “everyone” drinks a lot? Results of a survey by the National Institutes of Health on alcohol use and its consequences suggests that seven in ten adults always drink at low-risk levels or do not drink at all. Another three in ten adults drink at levels that put them at risk for alcoholism, liver disease, and other problems.

  • Why is being able to “hold your liquor” a concern?

  • What are signs that drinking is causing harm?

Should you call a counselor to talk about your drinking?

People are often reluctant to contact a counselor about their alcohol or drug use. They don’t know how the conversation will go, what questions to ask, or struggle with whether it is even a problem. If you are one of those individuals, I encourage you to take a short, anonymous online alcohol addiction test.
